The
World In Need
Today, the world has expressed the urgent need to protect
the
environment to ensure a healthy existence of human life, wildlife and
ecology.
Governments are fervently formulating strategies for sustainable line of
action to protect this world from utter destruction-be it man-generated
disaster.
In fact the whole
world appears poised for action now.
Nevertheless,
there exists a threatening gap between the government bodies’ desire to protect
the environment and the individuals contribution towards the same goal.
The gap gets wider
then we get to developing countries where wood fuel is a major source of energy
and where the war against illiteracy and poverty is still in progress.
In Ghana, although
the illiteracy rate is considerably high, there are a lot of programmes which
are making positive impact in the area of environmental protection.
All the same, we
still need to do more. And not until every individual is let to understand his
or her own environment, evolve means of protecting it effectively and
sustainable, governmental efforts would be lost like a drop of rain water in the
sea.
ECOG
The Evergreen Club of Ghana
started as a neighbourhood tree planting club with school children in 1987 and
was aimed primarily at school compound beautification.
The club has
now grown into a national voluntary, non-profit making organization with the
major aim of contributing to the national a forestation programme, creating
awareness, and educating the public on the need to protect our environment. The
youth and children are our major target groups who are organized into clubs in
schools and neighborhoods for a variety of environmental activities including
tree growing, education seminars/workshops and eco-study tours. ECOG also
participates in the formation of national policies and strategies for
environmental management and publishes a newsletter on environment and
development.
Our Vision
Ecog envisages a world where
majority of people are aware that, our environment is our survival, and are
ready to take on the challenge of protecting it, both for the present and future
generations.
Our Mission
To continually create awareness
and educate the public on the need to protect the environment, and to engage the
youth and children in practical activities to ensure sustainable development.
